Position Summary: The Director of Development has overall accountability for generating revenue through donations, grants, fundraising events and capital campaigns, for the marketing of the services House of Ruth Maryland provides, and for ensuring that our brand is consistent across all forms of communication. The position is responsible for creating a strategy that continually brings in new donors while maintaining and growing the current donor base in order to meet the financial needs of the agency.

The position oversees all aspects of event planning, donor relations, recordkeeping and gift acknowledgements, the agency’s volunteer program and donor contributions of items and services, as well as the development and production of collateral. The position oversees how the agency receives contributions of items, and how those items are best used to further our support of clients. This includes managing the agency’s social enterprise Ruth’s Closet, branding, and media relations. The position works directly with members of the Board of Directors to ensure their financial commitments are met, and to engage them in all fundraising activities. A member of the senior leadership team, the position reports directly to the Executive Director.

Primary Responsibilities:

Create a strategic direction for Development that ensures current revenue goals are met and that HRM is positioned to grow them year over year.

Create and implement a strategy specific to bringing in new donors in each of the geographic areas we serve, which includes Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, Baltimore County as well as Baltimore City.

Meet goals for maintaining and growing the giving levels of active donors, as well as goals for re-engaging lapsed donors.

This position is responsible for researching private and corporate foundations, both local and national, to determine if they could support our work, and for establishing productive relationships with the leaders of the foundations.

Create and oversee capital campaigns

Ensure that all plans are in alignment with the agency Strategic Plan.

Develop and oversee Development department budget.

Provide quality assurance monitoring of all processes and reporting from the Development department.

Work closely with all Board of Director members to help guide them to the contributions they are best suited for.

Ensure that all materials produced in the agency consistently reflect and reinforce House of Ruth Maryland’s brand, and meet quality standards.

Oversee the direction and coordination of Ruth’s Closet and the Donation Center ensuring alignment with both receiving in-kind donations our clients need and leveraging the potential for financial contribution to our programs

Create and oversee processes for matching volunteers with the needs of the agency, and ensuring everyone has a good experience.

Create and implement an official planned giving program.

Authority:

Create and implement strategies and processes for the department in order to meet both department and agency goals.

Identify and pursue grants and private giving sources

Approve all hiring decisions for Development department.

Design and carry out both performance improvement plans and professional development plans for direct reports.

Approve and oversee implementation of both performance improvement plans and professional development plans, for all other Development department staff.

In coordination with the CFO develop annual department budget.

Approve budgeted expenditures for Development department.

Negotiate pricing and contract terms with vendors.

Approve all materials and messaging that HRM produces

Approve all requests from the media

Speak on behalf of the agency with donors, the community, the media.

Recommend messaging for the agency for approval by Executive Director.

Measures of Success and/or Accountability:

Activities and outcomes of Development department are aligned with the agency Strategic Plan, Mission, Vision and Values, and operation goals.

Fundraising goals, established based on the financial needs of the agency, are being met consistently.

Department meets quality and service targets including deadlines for completion of electronic and paper documentation and data entry efforts.

Department operates within budget.

Staff members have the necessary skills and training to adequately meet the daily challenges of their jobs.

Individual relationships with donors, board members, community organizations are in place and supporting the work of House of Ruth Maryland.

People dropping off donations to the agency and shopping at Ruth’s Closet have a positive experience that makes them feel appreciated for their contribution to the work of House of Ruth Maryland.

The community is well aware of the work the agency does, and the impact that their support has.

The look, feel and messaging of all materials and communications created by the agency is consistent.
